Secondment Worker

The Secondment Worker route is for overseas workers who are undertaking temporary work assignments in the UK, where the worker is being seconded to the UK as part of a high value contract or investment by their employer overseas.

Eligibility requirements:

This is a points based application. You must score 40 points in total.

Sponsorship-20 points
Job at an appropriate skill level-20 points

The applicant needs to be actively employed by a foreign company that has a Home Office- registered contract with their UK sponsor and has worked for that company for at least 12 months outside the UK.

The applicant must have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship for the position they’re applying for, provided by an employer who is approved by the UK Home Office to sponsor a Secondment Worker and has a Home Office-registered contract with an overseas company where the applicant will work.

He or she must be sponsored for qualifying employment that requires at least a minimal degree of ability.

How long you can stay

The maximum time you can stay in the UK on a Secondment Worker visa is 2 years.

Switching to Secondment Worker visa

It is possible to change (‘switch’) to a Secondment Worker visa if you’re already in the UK on a different type of visa.

You cannot apply to switch to this visa if you’re currently in the UK:

  • on a visit visa

  • on a short-term student visa

  • on a Parent of a Child Student visa

  • on a seasonal worker visa

  • on a domestic worker in a private household visa

  • On immigration bail

  • because you were given permission to stay outside the immigration rules, for

    example – on compassionate grounds

    Family members eligible to join:

Your partner and children can apply to join you or to stay in the UK as your ‘dependants’.
