Graduate Trainee

The Graduate Trainee route is for overseas workers who are undertaking temporary work assignments in the UK, where the worker is on a graduate training course leading to a senior management or specialist position and is required to do a work placement in the UK. It replaces the intra-Company Graduate Trainee route.

Eligibility requirements

This is a points based application. You must score 60 points in total.

Sponsorship-20 points
Job at an appropriate skill level-20 points Salary at required level-20 points

  • Applicant must be employed by the sponsoring organisation at the time of application, and have worked for that organisation outside of the UK for at least 3 months previous to the application deadline.

  • The applicant must have sponsorship for a qualified job with a standard salary of at least £23,100 per year for that position or whatever is the ‘going rate’ for the job role. They should also have a clearly defined progression toward a management or specialist function within the sponsor organisation as part of a structured graduate training programme.

  • The candidate must also have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship for the position they’re applying for, provided by an employer that has been approved to sponsor a Graduate Trainee by the UK Home Office.

    How long you can stay

    You can stay in the UK with a Graduate Trainee visa for whichever is shorter of:

  • the time given on your certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days

  • 12 months

    Switching to Graduate Trainee:

    You cannot apply to change (‘switch’) to a Graduate Trainee visa from inside the UK because you need to have worked for your employer overseas for 3 months immediately before you apply.

    Family members eligible to join:

    A Graduate Trainee can bring their dependents which include the spouse, unmarried partner and children under the age of 18.
